Assessment of Turbulent Models in Computation of Strongly Curved Open Channel Flows
Several rigorous turbulent models have been developed in the past years and it can be seen that more research is needed to reach a better understanding of their generality and precision by verifying their applications for distinct hydraulic phenomena; under certain assumptions. This survey evaluates the performance of Standard k-ε, Realizable k-ε, RNG k-ε, k-ω and RSM models in predicting flow ...
متن کاملGradually-varied Flows in Open-channel Networks
− Reported here are some results obtained, from a calculus algorithm application that, based on known equation analytical solutions of water flow profiles, allows the study of steady-state, gradually varied flow in open channel networks. The procedure allows to calculate, in the case of slow water flow into gradually downward slope channels, in the direction of motion, the florates and water le...
متن کاملPort-Hamiltonian discretization for open channel flows
A finite-dimensional Port-Hamiltonian formulation for the dynamics of smooth open channel flows is presented. A numerical scheme based on this formulation is developed for both the linear and nonlinear shallow water equations. The scheme is verified against exact solutions and has the advantage of conservation of mass and energy to the discrete level.
متن کاملAdaptation of Preissmann’s scheme for transcritical open channel flows
Despite widely used for the solution of one-dimensional subcritical flows governed by Saint-Venant's equations, the Preissmann's scheme cannot solve transcritical flows. This inability is due only to the solution methods created for non-transcritical flows. Transcritical transitions present specific properties which have to be adequately represented in the numerical method. A modified version o...
متن کاملMechanism of secondary currents in open channel flows
This paper describes the conditions for initiation and maintenance of secondary currents in open channel flows. By analyzing the Reynolds equation in the wall-normal and wall-tangent directions, this study reveals that, like other types of vortices, the secondary currents are originated in the near-boundary region, and the magnitude (or strength) of secondary flow is proportional to the lateral...
